The Mystery of Matter and Energy, Part II

by Guy McCarthy

In part 1 of this series, we saw how the theories of Max Planck and Albert Einstein inspired a generation of physics research in the early 1900s. The theory of quantum mechanics evolved, with the startling conclusion that, in the smallest portions, matter and energy actually have no physical basis. All that exists is a pattern of information, or more generally, an idea. But what is an idea? It is the basic unit of consciousness.

Here then, is the first awesome truth revealed by quantum mechanics:

"Matter and Energy are made from the same, non-physical stuff. And the stuff is called consciousness."

Deepak Chopra, one of the foremost spiritual teachers of our time, claims this knowledge is the key to creating abundance in our lives. In his best-seller The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success Chopra writes "The source of all creation is pure consciousness...pure potentiality seeking expression from the unmanifest to the manifest."

Understanding the relationship between our own minds and the conscious creative force of nature is the key to health and abundance. Deepak Chopra states, "The more tuned in you are to the mind of nature, the more you have access to its infinite, unbounded creativity."

In other words, our mind is merely a localized portion of the greater, cosmic consciousness that creates the entire universe. We are all made of the same mind-stuff. There are only two steps required to begin harnessing the infinite creative power of nature: 1) understanding the connection between our mind and the universe (which is why you are reading this article!), and 2) strengthening the connection.

Chopra recommends three daily practices to strengthen our connection with the greater cosmic mind: the practice of silence, the practice of meditation, and the practice of non-judgement. By cultivating these practices, even for only a few minutes per day, one begins to learn how to tap into the abundance of nature.

But can this knowledge solve problems on a global scale? What about poverty, pollution, and the energy crisis? These problems often have to do with the issue of abundance vs. scarcity. Poverty results from flawed economic and political structures. These structures are flawed because the leaders focus on scarcity when they should be focusing on abundance. For example, the leaders of a third world country, operating from a perspective of scarcity, might believe that selling their food to wealthier countries is better than feeding their own people. Or they might resort to attacking their neighbors, in an attempt to steal the resources of others.

A major cause of pollution is our reliance on fossil fuels such as coal and oil. The leaders of wealthy countries believe that energy resources are scarce, so they cling to aging technologies based on fossil fuel combustion.

In truth, there is no scarcity. We believe in scarcity only because we don't understand the infinite creative power of nature. But the creative power is real, and we can tap into it with our minds and with our machines to create abundance. Again, the theory of quantum mechanics provides the key.

A curious aspect of quantum mechanics is that sub-atomic particles are permitted to blink out of existence. This is acceptable as long as the particle blinks back in before the next measurable event. The implications of this little-known fact are enormous.

Most particles carry charges, such as electrons. If an electron blinks out of existence, the disappearing charge generates a flux. Flux is electromagnetic power; it is the operating principle within electric motors and generators. And sub-atomic particles are everywhere, even in empty space.

Here then, is the second awesome truth revealed by quantum mechanics:

"The finest structure of matter, indeed the very fabric of space, is seething with dynamic, electric energy."

This energy is called "zero-point vacuum energy" because it exists everywhere, even in a vacuum, even at the lowest possible temperature of absolute zero. A number of scientific papers have been published about this unique phenomena (see sidebar).

In studying zero-point vacuum energy, scientists have calculated that the energy content of empty space is actually greater than an equal volume of nuclear fuel! Vacuum energy is the power source from which the creative consciousness of nature manifests the entire universe.

Under normal conditions, vacuum energy flux is completely random and tends to cancel itself out. Can we build devices to tap this tremendous energy potential? Indeed we can!
